G6PD deficiency anemia
ICD-10 online (WHO version 2019) Favismus (also: Fabism, from Latin: faba - bean) is a pathological procedure of a G6PD deficiency (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency) with recurrent destruction of red blood cells (hemolysis) and chronic anemia. Favism is the most common enzyme disease in humans; Approximately 7.5% of the world's population has a pathologically altered G6PD gene, i.e. approximately 400 million people worldwide, primarily [in hot humid regions and in tropic regions] in the Mediterranean, Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia [and in Central and South "America"]. With about one in four of these G6PD deficiency people, the defect is so pronounced that significant symptoms appear [1] and one can therefore speak of favism.
Due to the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, the consumption of field beans (Vicia faba), the inhalation of their pollen and the use of some medication can cause the destruction of the red blood cells (hemolysis), which in rare cases can lead to death.
There exists a specialized G6PD Deficiency Association.

1. Ethiology and distribution1.1. Causes, inheritance: malaria in certain zones provokes a genetic malaria resistance
Favism is [a genetic variation, or western toxic Pharma claims]: an inherited, X-chromosomal recessive disease that is particularly common [in malaria regions or former malaria regions] among Sub-Saharan Africans and in the Mediterranean region among Italians (especially Sardinians), Greeks, and Sephardic Jews and Arabs, but also common among Thais, Chinese and Indians [and in Central and South "America"]. About 10% of the African-American male population are affected. One reason for this accumulation among certain ethnic groups may be that the G6PD defect offers a certain resistance to the malaria pathogen which is [or was] common in these areas.
[Peroxides destroy red blood cells]
Due to the lack of functional glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, not enough NADPH can be provided to regenerate the glutathione, so that peroxides can attack the membrane and the SH groups of the proteins of the red blood cells (erythrocytes) without hindrance.
1.2. Triggers - certain food+pills which form peroxides destroying the red blood cells
In general, favism people is attacked by a distruction of red blood cells (haemolysis) only when the favismo people ingests substances that produce hydrogen peroxide, such as:
- Beans, especially broad beans (Vicia faba, hence the name "favism")
- Peas
- Currants
- Acetylsalicylic acid [Aspirin etc.]
- Metamizole
- Sulfonamides
- Vitamin K and derivatives
- Naphthalene
- Aniline and it's derivatives
- Antimalarials [including chloroquine!]
- Nitrofurans
Other triggers can be viral or bacterial infections, stress and acidifated blood by metabolism (metabolic acidosis).
2. Symptome: in the worst case is a total organ failure
After the intake of the above-mentioned triggers, severe, possibly life-threatening hemolytic anemia may occur with fever, chills, back and abdominal pain as well as weakness up to shock within hours or a few days [shock with complete organic failure and with death].

In order to counteract hemolysis, reticulocytes, the precursor cells of the red blood cells (erythrocytes), are released into the blood to an increased extent, and their glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase shows residual activity in hemizygous dark-skinned and heterozygous people, so that the crisis can be overcome. In contrast, in light-skinned patients, the lack of functional enzyme is usually much more pronounced, so that hemoglobinuria with complete kidney failure can possibly occur. [At the end comes mycroembolism, the failure of all organs and death].
3. Therapie: evade certain things
There is currently no causal therapy (2014). Therapy therefore consists in avoiding the absorption of the above-mentioned substances. The life expectancy then does not differ from that of [people with without malaria resistance]. In extreme hemolytic crises, human haptoglobin was used in one case to intercept the free hemoglobin in order to reduce the resulting hyperbilirubinemia. [2]
4. Malaria and favism - the anti malaria pill chloroquine with favism people destroys red blood cells provoking death

People with lack of GIc-6-P-DH have a relatively low malaria infection rate when they live in endemic malaria territories. This can be explained by this [genetic variation]: Malaria pathogens (plasmodia) are more sensitive to radicals than human cells and can therefore not reproduce sufficiently due to the disruption of the pentose phosphate pathway which is causing an accumulation of radicals in the human red blood cells.
Malaria therapy with chloroquine, however, also triggers [mostly fatal] destruction of red blood cells (hemolysis) due to high radical formation in the presence of favism.

And EXACTLY THAT happened to dozens of Corona19 patients in New York and London because the doctors had no idea about malaria resistance and the genetic variation favism of Africans and Asian people, and they gave them chloroquine. The same can have happened also in northern Italy, which was once a malaria area.

And the same vulnerability to favism and destruction of red blood cells by chloroquine may count for Central and South "America", above all in Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and in Brasil with malaria, in Columbia and in Brasil even with many African origin people. This counts also for the Latinos from the malaria countries working in the "USA" or Canada or in Europe. So one has to test the malaria resistance (or at least ask the origin of the grand parents), other pills than chloroquine have to be given. Therefore, chloroquine is only safe in countries without malaria and with people without malaria resistance G6PD favism.
