the common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) can
block spike proteins from binding to the ACE2 cell

The researchers used high molecular weight compounds
taken from a water-based dandelion extract and put them
to the test in human HEK293-hACE2 kidney and
A549-hACE2-TMPRSS2 lung cells. The dandelion blocked the
protein-to-protein interactions between the S1 sub unit
of the spike protein and the human ACE2 cell surface
receptor. This effect was also true against the spike
protein mutations from the predominant variants in
circulation, including the United Kingdom (B.1.1.7),
South African (B.1.351) and Brazilian (P.1) variant.
The dandelion extract stopped SARS-CoV-2 spike
pseudotyped lentivirus particles from attaching to lung
cells and stopped an inflammatory process called

in vitro, further clinical studies are needed to

dosage of dandelion leaf is 4–10 grams steeped in hot
water, up to three times per day.
The study authors warn that reliance on vaccines is
risky and dangerous, not just for individual health but
also for herd immunity. Vaccine reliance only focuses on
antibody augmentation and is proving to be a high-risk
intervention with short term results. Vaccine injuries
are frequently reported. Re-infections post vaccination
are also common, as the vaccine puts pressure on the

During the cold season, N-acetylcysteine (NAC, ACC) is often

Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory
potential
In a recently published review paper, Prof. Dr. Adrian
Gillissen, Director of the Clinic for Pulmonary and
Bronchial Medicine at Klinikum Kassel, compiled the
results of various studies on the antioxidant and
anti-inflammatory potential of NAC. According to the
findings to date, NAC has a direct antioxidant effect on
the one hand, and an indirect stimulation of the
glutathione system on the other.
NAC molecules circulating in the blood are easily
oxidized due to their SH group. The reaction product is a
double molecule linked by a disulfide bridge. Studies have
shown that NAC preferentially reduces reactive oxygen
species (ROS) such as H2 O2, hydroxyl radicals, and
hypochlorous acid.
After systemic administration, NAC is predominantly
deacetylated in the liver. From the released cysteine,
cells can produce the tripeptide glutathione
(γ-glutamylcysteinylglycine), a significant endogenous
antioxidant; this has been demonstrated for bronchial
epithelial cells, for example.
Studies in vitro and in vivo with
animals
Arthritis: The antioxidant potential of NAC could
be harnessed to treat joint inflammation. When
inflammatory cells migrate into cartilage and bone,
producing increased ROS, this promotes joint destruction.
In animal models, prophylactic intra-articular NAC
injection reduced nitric oxide-induced articular cartilage
destruction and chondrocyte apoptosis. In vitro, NAC
decreased the stimulation of proinflammatory cytokines,
among other effects.
Inhibition of carcinogenesis (inhibition of cancer):
In animal models and in vitro, for example, NAC was able
to degrade carcinogens, repairing DNA, and inhibit tumor
cell progression. In addition, the compound inhibited the
mutagenicity of doxorubicin and reduced the urotoxic
effect of cyclophosphamide.
Human studies on the cancer-protective effect of
N-acetylcysteine are so far few. In the EUROSCAN study,
patients with carcinomas of the ear, nose and throat and
lung were administered 600 mg of N-acetylcysteine per day
for two years; however, clinical evidence of a protective
effect compared to placebo could not be provided.
Endothelial dysfunction
It is well known that ROS have an
endothelial-damaging effect and thereby promote
endothelial dysfunction. LDL oxidized by ROS stimulates
the formation and release of proinflammatory mediators.
Because of its antioxidant effects, N-acetylcysteine
could theoretically counteract these and numerous other
processes. Animal and in vitro studies have shown that
NAC is indeed capable of reducing ROS-mediated
endothelial dysfunction.
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is
a rare lung disease with poor prognosis in which
activated neutrophil granulocytes, among other factors,
play an important role. They release pro-inflammatory
mediators (e.g. TNF-α, interleukin-1-beta) and reactive
oxygen species that destroy proteins, fatty acids, DNA
and other molecules. In addition to cellular studies,
some in vivo studies have shown that IPF patients can
benefit from NAC treatment. For example, in the IFIGENIA
study, 51 IPF patients were treated with azathioprine
and prednisone, and 75 also received 600 mg of NAC
orally three times daily. With NAC treatment, vital
capacity and diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide
improved significantly; with regard to lethality, there
was no significant difference between the two groups. In
his review article, Gillissen points out the limited
significance of this study, as there was no placebo
group.
COPD: The current GOLD guidelines for the
treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (Global
Initiative for COPD) do not recommend the routine use of
N-acetylcysteine; in the guidelines of the Respiratory
League and the German Society for Pneumology and
Respiratory Medicine, it is classified as "optionally
helpful". The reason: patient studies to date have not yet
been able to demonstrate any clinical benefit, such as a
reduction in the exacerbation rate or an improvement in
diffusion capacity in COPD patients. A UK guideline
recommends prescribing NAC for those COPD patients who
benefit.
Cardiac and renal protection: In small studies,
patients who underwent bypass surgery for ischemic disease
benefited from NAC administration. This was evident, for
example, in the fact that troponin and malondialdehyde
serum levels were significantly lower compared with the
control group. Elevated serum troponin levels indicate
myocardial damage; malondialdehyde is a breakdown product
of polyunsaturated fatty acids and serves as a biomarker
for oxidative stress.
The prophylactic administration of N-acetylcysteine has
been discussed, e.g., in cases of unstable angina pectoris
and impending myocardial infarction. When contrast media
are administered during renal examinations, there is a
high risk of contrast nephropathy, especially in
pre-damaged organs. Due to its antioxidant potential,
N-acetylcysteine may have some protective effect, although
study results to date do not yet clearly prove this.
Conclusion
In addition to its secretolytic properties,
N-acetylcysteine has been shown to have antioxidant and
anti-inflammatory potential. Animal experiments and in
vitro studies give rise to the hope that the active
ingredient will find further applications in the future
beyond the indications already approved, e.g. in heart,
kidney and liver diseases, tumors or arthritis.
